More than 40 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion calling on the government to reject any proposal by the Competition Commission's groceries inquiry to relax out-of-town planning policies.

In its provisional findings, the commission suggested lifting planning restrictions on out-of-town sites.

The EDM, put forward by Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield Attercliffe, argues that weakening the planning system would lead to the closure of local shops. It calls on the government to "retain existing tests such as need and accessibility and to strengthen planning policy for town centres by also introducing a presumption against out-of-town retail development".
