While supermarkets preach the benefits of category management in fresh produce, doubts over how many have totally succeeded have been expressed by Professor David Hughes of Wye College. He agreed with other speakers that often there appeared to be little dialogue between multiple departments even though they shared a common goal. Speaking at Fruit Focus, Hughes said there was still "bare knuckle fighting" over price" instead of an improved multiple/producer relationship ironing out fluctuations. However even if there were an improved long-term commitment between multiples and growers, there seemed little chance retailers would help cover growers' financial risk when crops were hit by weather conditions, said AFI chairman Douglas Kemp. {{M/E FRESH PRODUCE }}
