The Association of Convenience Stores is encouraging its 3,000 members to take part again in this year's British Food Fortnight, which runs from 23 September to 8 October.

Hugh Arnott, ACS retail sales manager, said: "Research has indicated that British Food Fortnight has a real impact on sales."

According to Alexia Robinson, BFF organiser, the ACS's involvement, together with promotions planned in 2,200 Londis and Budgens stores, proved that speciality and local foods were no longer the preserve of the delicatessen sector.

Londis and Budgens stores are being invited to adopt a local school to educate the next generation of consumers about Britain's regional food and drink.

This is part of a wider initiative in which 26,000 schools have been sent information on how to incorporate cookery and food topics during the event and draw upon the support of local retailers and chefs.
