Netto is to start holding weekly open days for buyers to help it compete with the growing number of promotions by the multiples and other discounters.

The discounter hopes the initiative will help it offer better promotions and products that none of its competitors stock.

Netto wants to reach out to a great number of suppliers and is open to offers of grey market, clearance and short-dated products in its hunt for products to wow customers. "This opens up the sluices for suppliers who don't know Netto," said MD Charles Kay. "We feel we have been missing the boat a bit on these deals and we want to get new and exciting products. I want to sharpen our price perception."

The first Open Buying Day will be held on Wednesday in South Elmsall. Suppliers will be able to turn up without an appointment and will receive a decision on the day.
