New Oddbins owner Ex Cellar has already embarked on a review of the business, following its purchase of the retailer earlier this week. Simon Baile, founder of the two-strong Ex Cellar off-licence operation, bought the business for an undisclosed sum from its French owner Groupe Castel. The acquisition was funded by a group of private investors led by Baile, son of Nick Baile who ran Oddbins in its 70s heyday. He replaces Fabrice Bidault as MD while his brother-in-law Henry Young becomes chairman. “We are looking at the structure of the business and developing plans,” said Baile. “This is a cash-positive business with plenty of stock, great locations throughout the UK and passionate staff.” The ailing Oddbins business has 154 stores in the UK and four in Ireland. According to the company’s most recently filed accounts the business lost £8.6m in the year to end 2006.
