A bidding war for New Zealand supermarket chain Woolworths is widely expected now regulators have given the green light to Australian group Foodland to stage a bid. Top NZ grocer Foodstuffs approached the Commerce Commission to challenge the bid of Foodland subsidiary Progressive Enterprises to buy the chain from Dairy Farm International on competition grounds. Foodstuffs is pinning its hopes on the Court of Appeal which will review Foodland's application this month. The unsolicited bid from Progressive prompted a flurry of competing bids from rivals believed to include South Africa's Pick 'n' Pay and the unrelated Woolworths chain in Australia. {{NEWS }}
