The Association of News Retailing has settled its major differences with the Joint Industry Group (JIG) after quitting the organisation in February, claiming it was failing to address issues that affected retailers.

ANR managing director John Lennon said the association was ready to return to the group following negotiations.

The appointment of Simon Marinker as JIG chairman was also a positive move, because of his retail background, Lennon added.

“We have been convinced that there will be greater urgency to JIG’s deliberations. However we need to agree details in relation to JIG’s objectives and timings,” said Lennon.

ANR is the newspaper and magazine arm of the Association of Convenience Stores and JIG membership also comprises representatives of newspaper wholesalers and publishers.

JIG was established with the aim of resolving issues such as rising carriage charges, falling newspaper margins and supply shortcomings.
