Newsagents could benefit from the government’s new American-style urban development policy, according to the National Federation of Retail Newsagents.

NFRN spokesman Robert Gunning said the new Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) could give newsagents “a distinctive voice in the allocation of funds for local improvement projects.”

The schemes, which create partnerships between councils and business, aim to regenerate city and town centres and are funded through an additional levy on business rates. “More resources could be poured into crime prevention and efficient transport links, two key areas for micro-businesses,” said Gunning.
