NFU president Peter Kendall has renewed calls for independent policing of supplier relationships.

In an interview with The Grocer, Kendall says a proactive auditor is required to enforce good buying practice among major retailers. He argues the current system of asking first-tier suppliers to report abuses has failed farmers and the chain.

Regulation will cost money, he concedes, but the government - and also farmers - should be prepared to pay. He also claimed price cutting was jeopardising farmers' ability to look after the countryside.
