The NFU has gathered 30,000 signatures for a petition calling on the government to act to halt to curb illegal food and plant imports. The petition was handed to DEFRA food and farming minister Lord Whitty at the Labour Party conference this week. The NFU is concerned that inadequate border controls could bring a repeat of epidemics like foot and mouth. Supporters include NFU Cymru Wales, NFU Scotland, the National Pig Association, the Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs, the Women's Food and Farming Union and the Ulster Farmers' Union. NPA chairman James Black said: "Spot checks on flights from Nigeria suggest 230 tonnes of illegal meat arrive each year on that route alone. The potential for diseases similar to foot and mouth and swine fever to be reintroduced is disturbing." {{NEWS }}
