Sir; At risk of boring some of your readers, may I assure the Soil Association (The Grocer, Letters, April 1, p18), whose certification standards are well respected, that there was never any intention to allege that processed organic foods are allowed to contain 5% GMOs. I had imagined everyone knew that GMOs are excluded from organically produced foods. Brevity meant it was unclear that my reference was to the 5% by weight of certain non-organic ingredients permitted in a product labelled organic. My point is that if everyone agrees organic standards tolerate this level of up to 5%, why was a reader querying "a tolerance of 0.1% of GMOs in foods is accepted as GMO-free"?
