The Wholesale Confectioners & Tobacco Alliance has launched a smuggling log in association with Customs & Excise. Tobacco sales account for 60% of turnover among the 120 WCTA members, while the total loss to the Treasury on tobacco smuggling is estimated at £2.5bn a year. Industry figures show that, this year, the percentage of cigarette sales where duty was unpaid, has risen to almost 33%. Wholesalers will keep track of any suspicious activity in their area, including any direct approaches they receive from smugglers. The logging initiative follows on from WCTA joining the government's Excise Alliance in April, which includes alcohol and tobacco manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. WCTA chief executive John Bowden said: "We believe the log will provide detailed intelligence and help to detect smuggling hotspots." {{NEWS }}
