Experts say it remains unclear what effect world trade talks will have on the UK’s red meat industry.
The consensus among speakers and delegates attending the MLC’s Outlook conference this week was that there should be no shortage of red meat in the wake of CAP reform - for now.
There were, however, warnings of changes in the structure of the industry as a result of WTO negotiations. Defra director Andy Lebrecht said assessing the impact on the red meat sector of the Doha Round agreement was “difficult”, but he predicted that beef and pigmeat producers would suffer as prices fell.
