Noble Foods, the UK's biggest egg supplier, has confirmed to The Grocer that it is in discussions to purchase luxury pudding business Gü.

In a statement to The Grocer, Gü Chocolate Puds has also acknowledged it is in exclusive talks, though it would not say with whom.

"We are in negotiations with an interested party but due to confidentiality commitments we are unable to confirm the details," it said, adding that it had received a number of approaches from large groups interested in buying a stake in Gü.

Noble is understood to want to buy the business outright, but Gü pledged to remain autonomous, even if it does sell off a stake in its business.

Securing additional investment would allow for development of the brand and enable it to be built into a stronger business, said Gü. "The objective is to take advantage of the opportunities a bigger group can offer us," it said.

The purchase would expand Noble's premium chilled desserts portfolio. At present, Noble owns the Serious Food Company brand, which it acquired in August 2008.

Other companies thought to have been in the running include Yoplait, Daniels Foods and Nestlé.

Gü's chilled desserts portfolio is currently worth £16.2m, sales having increased 9.3% from £14.8m last year [Nielsen MAT 3 October 09]. Ambient products are also sold under the brand.
