The electrical goods market is one of the largest growth areas of the non-food market tracked by Information Resources. Worth over £755m, it has grown by a huge £123m in the latest year, and has been one of the main drivers of the 11% growth seen in the total market.
“The significant gains made by electrical in the past year highlights a blurring of the boundaries between traditional electrical retailers and the major supermarkets. Shoppers have an increasing preference for a ‘one-stop’ shop where they are able purchase everything they need under one roof”, says Jake Sudlow, retail account director. “Retailers have responded by increasing the space in-store to electrical products over the past two years. Asda and Sainsbury in particular have almost doubled the average number of electrical lines they stock since 2001.”
