Nestlé and Northern Foods are part-funding PhunkyFoods, a groundbreaking anti-obesity drive in Essex schools.

Essex became the first county council to sign up all its schools to the healthy eating and physical activity programme, which is aimed at tackling obesity among children.

Teaching key health eating and physical activity messages in a fun manner, the project was developed by nutrition expert Purely Nutrition and Northern Foods in 2005 and is now funded by Northern, Nestlé and Cargill/Frontier.

Kids attending 146 schools across the Basildon, Brentwood and Thurrock education areas will receive two one-hour sessions a week, consisting of an hour’s dietary advice and an hour’s physical exercise. The scheme may be rolled out across the UK.
