Grocery industry charity Caravan is better off to the tune of £65,000 following the latest annual rowing fundraiser on Lake Windermere.

More than 30 teams took part, with a total of 144 rowers paddling their way across the lake for the 13-mile sponsored row, which was sponsored by Holland’s Pies and organised by Heineken.

One of six Heinz boats to take to the water emerged on top, crossing the lake first in an hour and 50 minutes. Other companies to field teams included Waitrose, Booker and Nisa.

Caravan director general Gillian Barker said the funds raised would help the charity’s beneficiaries during the coming year, both with regular payments to former industry workers in need and in the shape of emergency grants.

Qualifying beneficiaries receive an annual payment, paid quarterly, while Caravan also helps with essential white goods.

Barker added: “Events such the Windermere Row are not only great fun but also raise much-needed funds to help those in the industry that have fallen on hard times.”
