Life after the Over Thirty Months Scheme got off to a smooth start this week, according to reports. There are 10 plants approved for slaughtering older cattle, with more set to join them soon.
“Some of the approved plants slaughtered older cattle and everything went well,” said the MLC’s Duncan Sinclair. “As more abattoirs come on stream, we expect more farmers to begin sending their older cattle for slaughter, rather than opting to put them through the OTM compensation scheme that will continue to run at this stage.”
Retailers have been urged to make the FSA’s new consumer booklet about BSE testing available to their customers.
