The gap between olive oil and cooking oil continues to widen with consumers shunning both vegetable and sunflower oils in favour of olive, according to new figures published in The Grocer this week.
Data from TNS shows that while the total cooking oils market grew by 4.2% year-on-year to £178m (52 w/e April 24, 2005), sales of vegetable and sunflower oil remained stagnant, growing at only 0.9% and 0.2% respectively. Growth in the category is being driven by extra virgin olive oils up 3.9% in value, driven by brands such as Filippo Berio, and standard olive oil, up 16.5%, as well as other speciality oils.
