Demand for organic food in Britain is outstripping the rest of Europe for the first time, according to a report in The Observer this Sunday.

The rise in sales of organic produce is now running at £1.7m a week, as estimated by the British Soil Association.

The most pronounced market for growth has been in the infant market with four in five babies now being fed largely with organic produce.

Sainsbury recently abandoned a range of conventionally-produced food for toddlers in favour of organic ranges.
