Sales of organic food increased 30% to £1.6bn last year, the Soil Association has revealed.

The association attributed the rise to a number of factors including TV chef Jamie Oliver's Channel 4 programme about school dinners, and Danish research which found that there were higher levels of nutrients in organic milk.

Patrick Holden, director of the Soil Association, said: “Here is an example of how every citizen can exercise their buying power to bring about a more sustainable future.”
