The area of organic land under horticultural production increased by 4.5% from 7,400ha in April 2004, to 7,700ha in January 2005, according to the Soil Association’s Organic Market Report 2005.
There were increases in the area of organic potatoes (12%), fruit and nuts (13%) and herbs (231%). However, there were decreases in alliums and root veg (down 28%), and flowers and ornamentals (down 38%).
Soil Association director Patrick Holden also expressed concern over increasing levels of imported organic produce.
Sales of all organic products rose 11% to £1.2bn last year, according to the report.
