Consumer demand for organic food could lead to shortages in the sector, a Mintel report has predicted.

The organic food sector had grown by 70% since 2002 to £1.5bn but was struggling to cope with demand because of a reluctance from farmers to convert their land to organic and increasing demand for biofuels, the report found.

Despite the problems, the market would still grow 54% by 2012, with sales set to exceed £2bn in 2011, Mintel predicted.
