Eggs could soon be made more convenient thanks to a plan by egg marketing company Deans Foods to sell them ready-shelled.
The project, which has won a cash award from the Home Grown Cereals Authority (The Grocer, June 28, p14), is at the research and sampling stage, with two and four-egg packs due on shelf later in the year. Eight-packs have done well in France.
Barry Vigus, Deans' business development director, said consumers were put off eating eggs by fiddly, messy eggshells. "We believe there could be a real demand for chilled ready-shelled, hard-boiled eggs particularly from people looking for a quick snack."
Vigus claimed the eggs could be sited on several fixtures sandwiches, salad ingredients or dairy snackfoods.
