Members of the House of Lords have demanded that the new Groceries Code Adjudicator is given the "teeth" to impose fines on retailers who fall foul of the Groceries Supply Code of Practice.

Peers also called this week for the ombudsman to be installed soon to prevent "further haemorrhaging in our dairy industry".

BIS Under-Secretary Baroness Wilcox vowed to introduce the bill as soon as possible, but insisted that "the most effective method of control is ­naming and shaming".
