The government has dismissed claims from Friends of the Earth that the UK lags behind its European counterparts in the field of pesticide testing. According to a new FoE report, the "vast majority of foods consumed" are not tested at all. A spokeswoman said: "We have got to test a wider range of products, especially children's foods." DEFRA insisted all the major staples are monitored regularly by the Pesticide Safety Directorate and by the industry: "We're increasing the number of tests all the time, and we've taken the initiative in publishing our reports quarterly rather than annually." {{NEWS }}
