Denmark is reporting increasing difficulties with pig wasting illness PMWS, which has already contributed to the decline of the British pig herd.
The disease is becoming an increasing problem worldwide and an international workshop addressed the issue this week.
The Danish pig industry has reported an increasing number of cases, from two herds in 2000 to around 147 herds, although experts said the real number might be closer to 300.
MLC technical director Mike Attenborough said: "The disease is costing the EU nearly £600m a year in lost stock. Figures like that can mean the difference between profit and loss for individual British pig farmers."
