January was a poor month for news stand magazine sales with an estimated retail sales value of £152m, according to Seymour's Monthly Monitor. Seymour says the period was the worst estimated five-week month since January 2001. As a result of the drop, the three-month moving average is estimated to be the lowest since July 2000, at £133.5m. The 12-month moving average is estimated to be at its lowest since October 2000, at just under £136m. In terms of retail outlets, Tesco, Sainsbury, and Asda have all increased market share by 0.1%, taking their shares to 9.5%, 5.3% and 3.9% respectively. Five groups listed by Seymour showed a gain of 0.1% market share when November 2001-January 2002 sales were compared with those between October 2001-December 2001. They are WHS High Street (12%), Tesco (9.5%), Sainsbury (5.3%), Asda (3.9%) and Others (22.0%). Independents' market share dropped 0.3% to 36.3%. {{CTN }}
