Grocery prices at the big four supermarkets rose last month, according to latest results from The Grocer Price Index.

The cost of our 100-item basket rose by 0.3% between April 3 and May 1, and currently stands at £173.54, 44p higher than last month and the highest it has been this year.

Prices were affected by a late Easter, with an increase in the cost of some confectionery. Seasonality and a change in the country of origin of some fresh produce items were other factors behind the rise. However prices are still 0.1% lower than they were a year ago.
