Restoring profitability to British farming is the key to reform and development of agricultural policy, NFU president Ben Gill has told MPs. Giving evidence to the Environment Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee investigating the future of UK agriculture, he said: "Environmental stewardship cannot in itself provide the salvation for an industry that continues to suffer abysmally low returns and where many, including our most talented younger farmers, are leaving." He said the NFU accepted that financial support for farming would become more de-coupled from production, but more positive action was needed by the government to assist the industry to restructure and restore profitability. {{NEWS }}
