The government is enlisting the help of suppliers and trade bodies to urge retailers to update their alcohol licences before time runs out.
Local councils continue to report an alarming lack of applications for licences, which must be updated under the Licensing Act 2003.
John Murphy, director general of the FWD, said the Department of Culture, Media & Sport had called on the FWD for help. “Wholesalers should be concerned because if retailers don’t reapply for licences, they run the risk of losing their business.” The department has also asked leading drinks suppliers such as Diageo to put a statement on invoices reminding retailers to get licensed.
Retailers who do not get their licences renewed by November 24 will have to submit applications from scratch.
