Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has launched a stinging attack on the growing popularity of organic food.

Speaking at a Channel 4 food event (see right), Ramsay branded organic food as "over-hyped". "The problem with organic is that it has become hip and trendy," he said. "Unfortunately, there's a snob factor attached to it."

Ramsay also blasted the consistency of organic food, with too much food labelled organic. "Especially with meat, fish and organic vegetables there is a huge amount of inconsistency."

Ramsay did admit, however, that organic gave shoppers the confidence it was "totally clean, healthy and phenomenal".
