Remaining POs must be able to do better

Bob Farrand Chairman, Independent Retailers Confederation

Sir; The government has announced the closure of 2,500 post offices across the UK. Independent shops, stalls and post offices are at the heart of rural and urban life, and form an essential part of local communities. The closure of post offices will inevitably have a devastating knock-on effect on rural shops. To ensure that the same situation is not repeated in a few years time, it is essential that forthcoming changes are managed appropriately. The impact on shops combined with post offices must be assessed by people with retail expertise so that wherever possible these shops will remain open and viable. The Post Office must entend their range of services as quickly as possible to help remaining post offices to do better.
