Newspaper publishers are being urged to maintain pro rata percentage margins to retailers whenever there is an increase in the cover price of newspapers.

The campaign, launched by the National Federation of Retail Newsagents at its annual conference this week, is designed to help retailers stay in business.

National president Colin Finch warned that retailers could struggle with national newspapers that have a fixed printed cover price, together with a fixed retail margin that is also determined by the publisher.

They need to be given a periodic 'pay rise' through pro rata terms increases to offset the increasing overheads in running their shops, he said.

"Equally, when publishers reduce the cover price for promotional purposes, it is important that retailer pence per copy margins are maintained," he added.
