Retailers and health food groups have lost an appeal against the introduction of the Food Supplements Directive which is due to come into force next month.

The directive will make sure that all vitamin and mineral manufacturers submit their products for approval and inclusion on a list of recognised food supplements.

However, the Health Food Manufacturers’ Association have argued that the European Union had no power to issue the directive.

The Foods Standards Agency has said that it has received more than 500 dossiers from the supplements industry providing information on vitamins and minerals to enable the European Food Safety Authority to make safety assessments.
