Rippleglen is gearing up to make its long-awaited debut in the convenience sector.

The CTN retailer, which operates Arden News, Supernews, Candies, Supercigs and News Shops stores, revealed last August it was planning to trial a range of 270 grocery products in one of its stores.

The store should now be completed by August, said MD Mike Colley.

"Delays in the purchase of the freehold have held the project up, but we are ready to start building now," he added.

The range is expected to include ambient grocery and household lines, including bread, milk and chilled goods, to cater for distress convenience shopping, as well as alcohol lines. If the pilot is a success, the offer will be introduced into more stores, depending on their size, location and existing competition.

Rippleglen ranked 14th in The Grocer's ranking of top 50 independent retailers with 175 stores and sales of £86.3m last year.
