Stans Superstore's proposed second store, in Llangollen, Clwyd, is under threat after developers put in planning permission for a 15,000 sq ft supermarket in the same town.

Stans had an offer accepted on a disused car showroom and filling station in the town last October and was hoping to open a store on the site this summer. However, the future of the store has been thrown into doubt after it emerged a developer was pushing for a new supermarket in the town, which would be in direct competition with Stans.

Director Andrew Faulks said the store was "all set to go" but he was waiting on the results of a local council planning meeting, not expected until mid-June.

Stans, which has one store in St Martins, near Oswestry, has been eyeing the site in Llangollen for three years. It is the only one-store retailer left on The Grocer's Top 50 ranking of independent retailers.
