Portuguese pear producers are looking forward to a bumper harvest of the indigenous Rocha Pear. Perfect growing conditions over the last year look set to deliver the biggest crop in the last 10 years.
The UK is the largest export market for the Rocha Pear with a minimum of 35% of all the pears exported from Portugal destined for these shores.
It is also the most important market by value for growers with the majority of these exports made up of superior and category 1 produce.
Ricardo Machado, secretary general of the Portuguese Association of Pera Rocha, said: “We will work with the supermarkets on educating consumers on the versatility of the Rocha Pear both for cooking and baking.”
