C-store operator S-Mart has been wound up just months after announcing plans for forecourts.
“We have moved out of retail,” director Sean Kiely told The Grocer. “Even our corporate stores have been offloaded.”
He refused to discuss the decision in detail, but indicated he was not satisfied with the capital return from the business. Four months ago the company announced it was extending its reach into forecourts, having leased sites in Frizington, Cumbria and Hyde in Manchester. Both stores boasted a full convenience offering.
At the time, S-Mart had six company-owned stores and oversaw 70 other franchised shops, across the north west of England and south Wales. Most were variety stores, but 20 were c-stores.
