The Soil Association has backed consumer analyst Mintel's claims that the organic food market is under threat from increased scepticism. Soil Association spokeswoman Sue Flook said: "We agree with Mintel's growth estimates." Regarding the hightened degree of scepticism regarding the benefits of organics, Flook said: "People turned to organic food because of food scares. Now these have receded people are less scared about conventional food." Mintel consumer analyst James McCoy added: "Research suggests the proportion of active buyers of organics may have peaked.
