Sainsbury's and Arla Foods have committed to reducing emissions by signing up to the Carbon Trust's energy efficiency accreditation scheme.

Both companies will need to show they are making real energy savings and will be monitored by the National Energy Foundation.

They will compete with the 228 other businesses and organisations in the scheme to win awards for achievements in reducing energy. "Those that act today on climate change will reap the multiple benefits of improving their bottom line while increasing overall competitiveness," said Tom Delay, chief executive of the Carbon Trust.
