Wholesalers and independent retailers have ranked highly in The Sunday Times' Top Track 250 ranking of Britain's mid-market private companies.

Northern Irish company Henderson Group was the highest-ranked wholesaler, rising nine places to number 20, with sales of £55.6m and an operating profit of £12.4m in the year to December 2008. Fellow wholesalers Dhamecha Foods, James Hall & Co, Capper & Co, Parfetts, CJ Lang & Son and JW Filshill also made the list.

Frozen food discounter Farmfoods was the top ranking independent retailer, at 26, with sales of £423.9m and profits of £11m. Other independents listed were TJ Morris, Berry Bros & Rudd, B&M Retail, Booths, Euro Garages, Snax 24, and Park Garage Group. Warburtons was the highest-ranked food and drink company at 11, followed by William Grant & Sons at 12.
