Sales volumes of Scotch whisky sold abroad rose to record levels last year, according to data from the Scotch Whisky Association.

Sales volumes rose 6% to 1.051 billion bottles last year, beating a 2001 high of 1.013 billion bottles. The value of global sales increased 4% to £2.5bn.

“I'm greatly encouraged that distillers, large and small, are investing in facilities in Scotland and taking advantages of opportunities worldwide,” said Richard Burrows, chairman of the Scotch Whisky Association.
