MSP Mike Pringle plans to lodge a Member’s Bill in the Scottish Parliament to introduce a tax on plastic bags in a bid to reduce waste from supermarkets.

Pringle said the levy on plastic bags in the Republic of Ireland had been a “phenomenal success” as1.2 billion plastic shopping bags previously handed out in shops has been reduced by about 90%.

DEFRA said it had “no immediate plans” to follow suit in England and Wales, and stressed that carrier bags represented only a “small part” of the waste stream.
