A Scottish Grocers' Federation campaign for the introduction of a proof-of-age card for all 12-26 year-olds has moved a step closer.

This month the Scottish Parliament's Petitions Committee opened discussions with the Scottish Executive on how to take the SGF 100%-proof initiative forward.

More than 200 retailers have signed up to the campaign for the card, which would be needed for all age-related purchases. This would remove much of the confrontation between youths and till staff, said SGF.

"This is a positive step towards achieving a national proof of age card and I look forward to receiving the government's response," said SGF chief executive John Drummond. "Meanwhile I would encourage retailers to report all incidents of abuse and violence towards staff to the police and SGF."
