Scottish retailers have told the Scottish parliament a tax on plastic bags would hit retailers.
In a response to MSP Mike Pringle’s consultation on introducing an environmental levy on plastic bags in Scotland, the Scottish Retail Consortium said tax on plastic bags would increase business costs in Scotland. Retailers were already taking action by introducing biodegradeable alternatives, said SRC director Fiona Moriarty.
She said experience in Ireland had demonstrated a tax was damaging for retailers. “Customer theft increased hugely after the introduction of the tax in the Republic as people now leave stores with products in their hands and staff are unable to identify whether products have been paid for.”
