Wholesalers have launched a petition calling on the Scottish Parliament to abandon its plans for a tobacco display ban.

The Scottish Wholesalers' Association hopes wholesalers, their customers, suppliers and the public will sign a petition on its website. It says there is no evidence the display ban will deter youths from smoking and will be an unnecessary expense for c-stores.

"We have to try to change the Government's mind before it's too late," said executive director Kate Salmon. "We only decided to set it up this week and so far we have already received a lot of support from wholesalers."

Meanwhile, the anti-smoking campaign group ASH has called on members of the public in Scotland to write to their local shops to let them know that they support the proposed ban.
