Sir; It is hardly surprising that the supermarkets' submissions to the Competition Commission gives little away on their buyer power. They have little to gain from exposing damaging practices that would ensure the code of practice was strengthened and monitored.

It is vital the Commission obtains a breadth of independent information about buyer practices and policies both on breaches of the code but also where the code itself is not up to the job.

On planning and landbank issues, there is a real breaking of ranks between the supermarkets.

Several quite rightly point out that the lack of planning authority assessment of ­local store brands is a problem.

Tesco, however, claims landbanks are not a competition issue - they just need land in the 'pipeline'.

Whatever the reason, evidence suggests they are aiming to block competitors.
