Some 71 MPs have signed up to a new Parliamentary Early Day Motion backing the principle of a children’s food Bill (The Grocer, May 22, p14).
Labour MP Debra Shipley tabled the motion, which notes alarming increases in childhood obesity, on Monday. It follows her Private Member’s Children’s Food Bill which was presented to parliament on May 18.
The Bill was developed by Sustain, a group that campaigns for better food and farming. It would ban junk food from school vending machines and end deals between schools and confectionery firms.
