The Select and Save symbol group will be celebrating early in the new year as it is to open its 100th store.
It has also just launched its first Select and Save Commuter store in Birmingham, designed to meet the needs of city centre business and residential shoppers.
The store lies within a few hundred metres of two Tesco Express stores, but Select and Save director Kam Sanghera said that it was now pulling customers away from the multiple. “We have got a far more extensive range than the Tesco Expresses round the corner. We are trialling a concept that we believe is leading the industry. I don’t think any other group is anywhere near this.”
Sanghera and co-director Steve Jones took nine months to convert a former pub. Two-thirds of the store is chilled, with an emphasis on fresh, and one third is devoted to off sales. The first franchise is also running in Walsall and a second is planned for Birmingham next month.
